Resources for Afghan Hound Enthusiasts

  • Afghan Hound Puppies for Sale...

If you feel compelled to buy an Afghan Hound puppy instead of adopting one through Afghan Hound Rescue of California  - or another rescue organization -  please do your homework first.  Please only purchase a dog from a reputable breeder, from a breeder who has been recommended by The Afghan Hound Club of America or by an AKC affilliated regional club

Just because a "breeder" has a website and states that they are AKC  [American Kennel Club] affiliated does not necessarily make it true.  Make a few phone calls and ask the experts at the links above who they would recommend.

This recommendation holds true for any one considering buying a dog of any breed.  Visit the AKC website and click on BREEDS.  Make a few calls to the national club for the breed that you are interested in, and to the regional clubs, and get referrals to reputable breeders.

  • Afghan Hound Club of America Rescue

AHCA Rescue provides support, coordination, and financial assistance to a national network of volunteers. Our goal is to ensure that veterinary care, including spaying and neutering, temperament evaluations, foster placements, and loving, permanent homes are provided to homeless Afghan Hounds. AHCA Rescue receives its funding from individual contributors, fund-raising items and events, and from donations by regional Afghan Hound clubs.

  • Afghan Hound Breed standard

General Appearance: The Afghan Hound is an aristocrat, his whole appearance one of dignity and aloofness with no trace of plainness or coarseness. He has a straight front, proudly carried head, eyes gazing into the distance as if in memory of ages past. The striking characteristics of the breed-exotic, or "Eastern," expression, long silky topknot, peculiar coat pattern, very prominent hipbones, large feet, and the impression of a somewhat exaggerated bend in the stifle due to profuse trouserings-stand out clearly, giving the Afghan Hound the appearance of what he is, a king of dogs, that has held true to tradition throughout the ages.

  • Afghan Hound History

The Afghan Hound was discovered by the Western World in Afghanistan and surrounding regions during the 19th century, with the first specimens brought to England in the latter part of that century. Of the breed's origin and its history prior to then, little is known for certain. It was once believed that the Afghan Hound existed in Egypt thousands of years ago, with a second theory that the breed evolved on the steppes of Asia representing the original sight hound. A great deal of research has not provided proof for either of these speculations.

Please click here to visit the American Kennel Club [AKC] to learn more about the history of Afghan Hounds.

  • In Hope: An Animal Shelter Story

Thank you to Robert Valentine, a vet tech at the Ventura County Animal Shelter in Camarillo for creating this presentation and for sharing it with us all.

As a nation, we claim to love cats and dogs. Millions of households have pets, and billions of dollars are spent yearly on pet supplies and food. But as a nation, we should take a hard, sobering look at a different annual statistic: the millions of dogs and cats given up to shelters or left to die on the streets. And the numbers tell only half the story.

Every cat or dog who dies as a result of pet overpopulation—whether humanely in a shelter or by injury, disease, or neglect—is an animal who, more often than not, would have made a wonderful companion, if given the chance. Tremendous as the problem of pet overpopulation is, it can be solved if each of us takes just one small step, starting with not allowing our animals to breed. Here's information about this crisis and why spaying and neutering is the first step to a solution. -HSUS

  • Military working dogs in Iraq...

Regardless of how we each personally feel about the current situation in Iraq, those of us who love dogs are thankful for not only the men and women serving in Iraq, but also for the efforts of their four legged comrades.

Please take a moment to visit and read the compelling posting at the following link.

Thank you for all that you each do for so many!

  • Designer Dog vs. Shelter Dog

    Here's an interesting test.

Many so called "breeders" are mixing breeds of dogs and coming up with what they are calling "designer breeds", mean while animal shelters/pounds across North America are filled to the brims with these same mixed breeds.

Try your hand at the test at the link above and see how you fair.  And please keep your results in mind the next time you are ready to make a new addition to your family.
