Ms. Georgia Peach is an example of what can happen to your pet(s) if your lifestyle should change and you have not made provisions for the care of your animals.
Georgia’s owner passed away and at 10-years-old, she was left, by a family member at the Alameda Shelter where they have a 48-hour kill policy meaning that if someone else does not come to adopt the dog within 48 hours, the dog is destroyed. They are understaffed, over populated and do not have veterinary care on site.
She weighed only 33 lbs, she was so emaciated that she did not have the strength to stand on her own, she was frightened and had the shelter not called Afghan Hound Rescue, I have no doubt that she would have been euthanized. I took her to my home to ensure that she was getting the proper nutrition that would put her back on the road to recovery. Once she had regained some of her weight and muscle strength, she was then placed for adoption.
Unfortunately, older dogs also often end up in rescue situations due to health issues that their owners are not prepared for financially. It takes a special person that is willing to take on the challenge of an elderly dog’s habits, not to mention the expenses that go along with their health problems that will naturally arise, so the task of adopting an older dog to the general public is a daunting one for rescue organizations.
I decided to keep Ms. Peach after several months and only one inquiry about her from a young woman who was newly married with a child and whose husband was enlisted in the Army. Additionally she didn’t have any experience with Afghan Hounds, and she was not prepared financially to deal with medical issues should they arrive with a mature Afghan Hound.
Georgia is enjoying her new home, she loves chasing squirrels and lounging in the sun in her back yard. When she is inside, she spends most of her days on one of the beds, soaking up the sunshine and making sure that the other dogs “Do Not Disturb” her! She enjoys rides in the car, trips to the beach, snuggling with her human poppa AND she especially loves having her chin scratched!
Again two paws up to professional photographer Mark Rogers for taking his valuable time to take and share so many of the photographs on this site -- including this one of Ms. G. Peach.
