The Above document bears the seal of the Italian Genealogy Society and verifies that the most ancient recorded mentions of the Broccoli surname,(Nobles of Neapolitan Origins), go back to the to the year 1194, in the town of Lucca,Tuscany, where they held a high social standing . Their ancestors were also part of the powerful Paganelli family, rulers of Montemagno, a feudal castle near Pisa, notable to have given the Church a Pontiff, named Eugene III (who by the way, started the Second Holy Crusade in 1145 and I'm not too proud about that!) They held a place of honor among the Nobility of Lucca, and are descended from Lombard tribes around the time of the Carolingian reign (A Frankish Dynasty of Kings started by Charles Martel). From the Neapolitan branch of the family, there is mention of a celebrated patriot, who was bestowed honors in San Marino in 1869. The Broccoli family also settled in Carolei, Prov. di Cozenza.

Suplimentary historical information on Pope Eugene III

Eugene III

Pope from 1145-1153, the blessed Eugene III was born Bernard Pagnelli di Montemagno and was the first Cistercian pope. A disciple of St. Bernard of Clairvaux, who wrote De consideratione to instruct him in his papal duties, Eugene convoked several synods to reform the church, including ones at Paris (1147), Trier (1147-1148), and Rheims (1148). The fall of Edessa in 1149 shocked Eugene, and as pope, he urged Louis VII to liberate the city. In 1146, Arnold of Brescia controlled Rome and exiled the pope, who returned in 1148 and excommunicated Arnold. Eugene sent Nicholas Breakspear (later Adrian IV) to Scandinavia to reorganize the church there; Eugene also negotiated the Treaty of Constance, which laid out the terms by which Frederick Barbarossa would be crowned Holy Roman Emperor. Eugene died in 1153 and was beatified in 1872.
