Carnival is celebrated throughout the world. Some of the more famous ones are New Orleans', Rio de Janiero's and Trinadad's. But before the New World was even discovered, Venice was celebrating this festival, starting right after Christmas and lasting until Shrove Tuesday. Originally it was an extention of pagan ritual celebration. Through the centuries, Carnival was the stage of lavish masked balls,Commedia dell'Arte plays, musical celebrations and costumed parades that included the different segments of society. Eventualy the mask became the symbol of the Carnival. The advantages of being masked were great. If you are wearing a mask, nobody could recognize you, and you could get away with things you would never dream of doing in public. Carnevale, was a name derived from the Latin root word for “meat”...It
was the time one could over eat and over indulge in many vices before the lenten
season would begin. On Shrove Tuesday the allegorical figure of “Carnevale”
would be mourned in a mock funeral. He would perish at midnight, and Quaresima
would be born, begining with Ash Wednesday...the time of fasting.

In the olden days there were no street lamps, so it was traditional to be escorted to your home by a hired lantern guide who assured your safe arrival home.I'm the guy in purple.
