Six Steps for Daily Scriptural Prayer

  1. CHOOSE - - - - - Choose a passage from one of the Gospels: you may pick a passage which you like, or read through one Gospel, a little at a time, or use the Gospel reading from daily Liturgy.

  2. QUIET - - - - - Find a place to be alone, a place of silence and peace.

  3. RELAX - - - - - Sit upright, but remain relaxed; try to put aside your cares, concerns and worries.

  4. REMEMBER - - - - - Be aware that God is with you all the time; He wants to be your closest friend.

  5. READ - - - - - Read your scripture passage aloud, and listen carefully.
    • What is the setting of this story? (Location; mood; occasion)
    • Who are the main characters?
    • Identify the principal action. What's going on?
    • Who are you in the story? (Spectator?, participant?)

  6. WAIT - - - - - Give the words a chance to sink in; give God a chance to speak.
    • Be there with Jesus.
    • Listen to his words; watch (or imagine) his actions.
    • Let him . . . speak to you, touch you, strengthen you.
    • Respond to him - be yourself.

Don't be discouraged if nothing happens immediately. It takes practice to have good prayer.

You may want to keep a journal of:

  • which scripture passages you read;
  • what you gained from it;
  • what God said;
  • how it affected you.
