OUR FIRST SOCIAL

By Sue Courteau

Some 13 to14 years ago our friend, Rich Carpenter, thought we should join the corvette club.  Rich had been a member for a few months and thought it would be fun for us to be members, too.  So, we decided to go with the club to the Lake Tahoe function hosted by the Fresno Club. There was a meeting where we learned the theme for that year was the TV show MASH.  The first thing the club decided was to wear pajama bottom style flag pants.  These were cotton pants with large red and white stripes and elastic waist and bottoms. They made your butt look like the American flag unfurled. Of course, the pants idea was suggested by someone who wore about a size 2! (I think this was her idea of a joke on the rest of us).  Since we were new we didn’t feel it would be proper to argue this point.

At this time we had only our ’67 convertible.  The first night we stayed in Stockton and the next morning we set off with the group.  We were following Rich.  As we headed up the mountain it began raining.  Of course, the car was never driven in the rain.  We tried to turn on the wipers, but they were frozen up.  The soft top was up on the car, however the rain was pouring in through the top of the windshield.  It wasn’t a tight seal.  Jerry was trying to see through the rain and I was mopping up the water coming into the car.  Rich was driving slowly and we were following his taillights.  Finally, we saw a NAPA auto parts store and bought some Rainex and applied this to the wet windshield.  Somehow, we made it to the Lakeside Inn in S. Lake Tahoe.  Sure enough the next day was sunny and everyone donned their slimming pants.  We all had a great time and I believe out club won the award for best drink.

Sunday it was time to go home.  We were driving down the mountain and an old man driving a Jeep type vehicle was sitting on the shoulder of the road.  Just when we got to his location he pulled out in front of us.  We nearly collided.  He threw up a rock and chipped the front headlight cover of the car.  Finally, we made it home.

We decided to join the club.  After all, where else could you have such fun and meet so many wonderful people!
