This picture with a wider view that includes the Lyster Bag, to the right, is from A Tribute to the Cactus Airforce, and the date approximated for the picture was April 20, 1943.

      By The Tent

      This picture was taken some time at the end of the first combat tour or at the beginning of the second combat tour at Guadalcanal near the ready tent. Dan McAnarney has made identification of those in the picture by comparing other photos with captions and speaking with members of the squadron:
      From the left: Ed Shaw, Charles C. Winnia(back row), Robert W. Votaw(back row), Dr. William Livingood, John L Morgan(back row), Herman H. Spoede , Unknown(back), Unknown, Gordon V. Hodde, George C. DeFabio, Foy R. Garison, Unknown, James N. Cupp , Gregory J. Weissenberger, and Milton N. Vedder.
      The second tour soon would take a toll on those in this picture: Winnia, Votaw, Spoede, and Garison, as well as Milton Peck who is not identified in the picture.



      VMF - 213 Pilots: Second Tour

      This picture has been identified as being taken on May 3, 1943, five days before the end of the VMF-213’s first combat tour.  A Chance-Vought F4U Corsair is in the background.  The complement of pilots remained the same for the start of the second combat tour.

      Based on pilot complement this picture was likely taken on between August 26 and September 3, 1943, at Espiritu Santos. A Chance-Vought F4U Corsair is in the background.

      3 Tour Survivors

      The picture, above, was taken after October 14, 1943, and prior to November 15, 1943, at Espiritu Santos.

      VMF-213 Survivors On Return
      Far left sitting, Dr. William C. Livingood, Flight Surgeon; in back standing from left to right, Capt. L. W. McCleary, Lt. Edward Shaw, Lt. John L. Morgan, and Wilbur J. Thomas, leading ace of the squadron. In front from left to right, Lt. George DeFabio, Lt. Col. Pierce, commander of the personnel group at Camp Miramar, Capt. Wallace, newly appointed squadron commander, and Lt. Arthur Boag. Milton Vedder remained in Australia due to complications of malaria and died shortly thereafter.  Stirling Harrison was transferred Novemver 14.
