I went to see "What's In The Hearts of Men" last night. Will Smith, Kym Whitley, Monique, Alex Thomas, Michael Colyar, Dawn Lewis, Anna Marie Horsford, Lisa Raye, Marla Gibbs, Rolanda Watts, Anita Pointer and Hattie Winston walked the "red carpet" as many others came out in droves to support former "N.Y.P.D." star, Malik Yoba at his Beverly Hills opening of "What's In The Hearts Of Men" at the Wilshire Theatre, 8440 Wilshire Blvd. It was a grand night for African-American theatre.

I was reminded of Stephanie Mills' origins as an actress and singer in "The Wiz" back in the day, and last night she looked and sounded as fabulous as ever. We knew Stephanie and BeBe
Winans could sing, but Malik? Whoa! Most of the audience was audibly surprised to hear Malik's incredible singing voice. We also witnessed the fine acting talents of co-stars BeBe Winans, the comedic Michael LeMelle, vocalist Julie Dickens and Patricia Cuffie.

Malik demonstrated many talents starring as the "ghetto fabulous" rapper, Jerome, with 5 kids and "fo' B.M.s" (translation: four baby's mamas), directed with George Faison and wrote the play and original songs with his brother, A. Rahman Yoba.

The show, based on Malik's own personal experiences, speaks to anyone who has been faced with the options of abortion, single motherhood, estranged fatherhood or a shot-gun marriage when faced with an unplanned pregnancy. A big "Thank You" to Malik for taking the covers off and allowing us to learn from his trials and his lessons. God will bless his courage and commitment to present the painful, yet liberating truth that we must ultimately GROW UP and face our fears as responsibly, mature men and women when it comes decisions about our children. That maturity includes commitment, forgiveness and trust.
