Subject CINCO DE MAYO HOAX 2005

Date Mon May 16 2005 16:44
Author Ms. Edward (contactus@proclubgear.com)

And now, in 2005, just in time for the mayoral race between Latino, Antonio Villaraigosa and Anglo incumbent, James Hahn, we get the "Cinco de Mayo" Hoax!

An email originating from Mayor James K. Hahn's office, containing a rumor about the Mexican Mafia planning to kill 400 Black males in "white tees" on Cinco de Mayo was circulated right before May 5, 2005.

The media was used to exacerbate the threat and caused enough people to believe it so that over 5,000 LAUSD school kids stayed out of school on May 5, 2005.

The "rumor" served to antagonize relations between Black and Brown people, the voting blocks that Mayor Hahn couldn't help but be uncertain about.

No one seems to want to address the "rumor" even in light of the fact that it worked to stir up fear and distrust between some in the Black and Brown communities. Communities that Villaraigosa had successfully secured to his side with endorsements by the Black leadership and clergy and Hahn was in fear of losing.
