When I discovered rockclimbing at age 15, I was amazed to find a whole new world that required intense focus, precise judgement and the willingness to take risks. Stepping into the unknown provided huge rewards - it did then and it does now. My life became a quest to share these discoveries - not only about adventure, but also about the hidden potential of life, and I continue to pursue this quest professionally as an adventure guide, a writer, a speaker and a corporate trainer. These have been supported by other skills and knowledge I've picked up along the way, such as photography, web knowledge and what it takes to stay active and healthy decade after decade.
On this website I outline my professional interests in the areas of:
Mountaineering and Adventure Keynote Speaking Human Resource Development Education and Training Writing Photography and Cinematography Health and Well-being
Often my work is a mix of these, e.g. I climb a mountain, then I write a book about it, which is illustrated with my photographs. But before any of this can happen there is the hard work of achieving maximum fitness and psychological readiness - both are good preparation for any major task, from climbing a mountain to writing a book or launching a new business.
The following paragraphs cover different aspects of my professional life, and some personal aspects as well. You can read them as you scroll through or you can Click on the INDEX if you'd like to be more selective in your reading. The "At Work" categories are covered more fully in dedicated pages, shown as tabs (links) in the menu bar above.

Public Speaking

At Work: Motivational and Inspirational Presentations

My mountaineering adventures have always had unexpected twists, which makes for great yarns. When I speak at corporate functions I aim not only to entertain, but also to motivate and inspire. Mountaineering also offers a convenient package for schools, as each expedition involves geography, history and culture, all packaged with the attention-binding glue of adventure. Leadership and Team-building

At Work: Human Resource Development

Human Resource Development is a huge category. Whatever we do, inevitably there are ways that we can do it better. My work in Human Resources involves helping people to know themselves better, to embrace new mindsets, and to be more efficient as teams and as individuals. Today fresh approaches are needed to deal with the enormous changes faced not only by many industries but also by whole societies. Within this landscape, I find it very rewarding to work with Perth-based Adventure West, a company with 20 years experience and a very impressive track record. The highlights of my work with Adventure West have been guiding glaciologists over the Equatorial glaciers of Irian Jaya, training senior RAAF outdoor skills training officers in new approaches to their wilderness operations, and spending 8 months (of an 18 month Adventure West project) helping coal miners turn their mine from the point of closure to profitability. Check the corporate section for more information.

At Work: Photography

I learnt to take photographs when working as a trekking guide because photos were needed for company brochures. I started with black and white when the brochures were low budget, which gave me a good feel for composition and textures, then moved into colour as the company began to grow. Soon I began selling photos and using them to illustrate my own articles. My photos have appeared in magazines and books (and on the covers of both), in newspapers, on websites and computer games, in advertisements and as posters. You'll my photos scattered through my site, but you might like to start looking under adventure, corporate or education.

Books

At Work: Adventure, Biography and Fiction

I wrote my first book at age 22 when recovering from frostbite gained on my first Himalayan expedition. It was an exciting climb but the book was badly written and luckily none of the dozen publishers I sent it to would publish it. My next attempt, "White Limbo" was an international success seven years later, and gave me the confidence to write a novel, guidebooks, more mountaineering titles and three biographies. I love writing books but once I start on one it takes over my life. Find out about my books

Outdoors Guide and Instructor

At Work: Trekking, Rafting, Rockclimbing, Mountaineering

I have worked as an adventure guide and outdoor skills instructor since 1978. I have been at the helm of rafts when being swept down such mighty rivers as the Franklin, the Trisuli and the Sun Kosi. But I have also been swept along the current of adventure travel, from the trickle of its beginings in the 70s to the floodwaters of the 80s and 90s. Political and economic forces have lessened the flow in recent times, but regardless of what is happening in the world, there is always somewhere you can get away to for an adventure. After 25 years, I still enjoy sharing the world's special places with people. I work with two world-class Australian companies and also conduct my own specialist trips. See the "Adventure Travel" link, part of the Adventure page above, for more details.

Health and Well-being

At Work: From Yoga to Pharmanex

Good health is largely a matter of choice, as you can take charge of most of the key parameters - stress, proper nutrition, regular exercise, while balancing commitments to work, play, family and community. As I'd like to keep adventuring for another two or three decades I exercise daily, eat a good vegetarian diet, take Pharmanex supplements, practice yoga and meditate. With this regimen I'm able to maintain my energy levels as I grow older, as well as my strength, flexibility and positive outlook on the world. And having shared the joys of adventure with hundreds of people on treks, river trips and climbs, I am now also sharing the benefits of a proactive approach to staying healthy.

Community

Giving back: Community

Even if we see ourselves as independent, our lives are held together by our society - and our society today is an international one. I have found that life is far more satisfying when you participate in the broader community. In the 1980s I wrote an historical novel about Tibet's fight for freedom, and became involved with helping Tibetans in Australia and in publicising their cause. More recently, I became one of the founding directors of the Australian Himalayan Foundation. Our vision is for a better life for the peoples of the Himalaya. All my fellow directors have had considerable involvement in the Himalayan regions, so we are well aware of the poverty and hardship. Our familiarity has also shown us how we can help. Click on the AHF link above for some inspiring stories.
In 2006 I was appointed to the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area Advisory Committee, as the outdoor nature-based self-reliant recreation representative. I consider it a great privilege to be on the committee, and I enjoy working with other committee members to enhance the conservation and management of the World Heritage Area.
