This ritual was taken from the Spell-A-Day Calendar several years ago. It is attributed to Gerina Dunwich. My sister and I like this spell so much that we have performed it every year since finding it. This year, 2003, is the first time I am performing it in cold Wisconsin. I have done it every year at my mother’s house in Nassau, Bahamas.
You will need a green candle. I always use bayberry, money drawing, or steady work. I figure I might as well use one that will do something. Also, simply using a green candle is too general for me. Be careful about the oil used to make general candles. For example, "
some candles are made with pine oil. If I am doing a spell for prosperity in the new year or at any other time, I certainly don’t want the cleansing power of pine in it.

" some candles are made with pine oil. If I am doing a spell for prosperity in the new year or at any other time, I certainly don’t want the cleansing power of pine in it. You will also need cinnamon, lotus or cypress oils. I try to use pure oils. The use of pure oils is not necessary. It is just a preference. Lastly obtain a piece of charcoal, a silver coin, and a piece of bread.
Here is the Dunwich’s spell: To ensure that your life is blessed with good luck through the next twelve months, perform this simple spell at midnight on New Year’s Eve. First, open every door and window of your house to allow the spirit of the old year to depart. Go outside and light a green candle that has been anointed with a few drops of cinnamon, cypress or lotus oil, and, without uttering a single word, reenter your house through the backdoor walk through every room with the candle in your hand, go back outside through the front door and then in again by the back. Additionally, you may place a silver coin, a piece of coal, and a piece of bread on a windowsill or porch at midnight on New Year’s Eve, and then bring them into the house after you rise from bed on New Year’s morning. I usually eat my bread sharing a piece with a relative. "
This time my bread disappeared. That is fine, because I do believe I will get something good in return.
