QUICK SETUP

COMPUTER AND CABLE TV SETUP GUIDE

Welcome new students to Ambling’s Salisbury University Village. Below is a guideline to assist you with setting up your computer and cable TV.  Please note that the setup here at University Village may be different from what you may have had at your previous residence. For example; the coax connection on the wall in the bedrooms and in the living room is only for cable TV and is not used as a cable connection for your computer. Secondly, on a separate wall plate you will see two connectors. One is for your telephone and the other is for your computer. These can be distinguished by the size of the jack opening. The smaller of the two is for your telephone* (see below for telephone service) and the larger jack is where you will plug in your computer.

At University Village, when you are connected to the Internet, you are part of a LAN or local area network. You are sharing a connection with everyone else here at University Village. For this reason, it is extremely important that you have anti-virus software installed and regularly updated on your computer. At the end of this guide you will find a list of recommended free software applications that will greatly assist you in maintaining your computer’s health. Please note that your connection speed to the Internet is affected by many factors. Among these, but not limited to, are: your computer processor speed, the amount of RAM memory installed, the size and speed of your hard drive, the amount of ad-ware, spyware, malware, etc. that has infected your computer. The cumulative amount of your fellow residents online at the time and the amount of online instant messaging, peer to peer file sharing, online gaming, amount of music, movie, and media files being downloaded and uploaded effect all of your computers. By helping your room mate keep a healthy computer, you are helping yourself to speeding up the network.

Here are the steps to take to properly connect you computer to the Internet.

1.)    Connect a RJ45 Ethernet cable to the larger of the two connectors in the wall plate and the NIC port on your computer. Under most circumstances, this is all you will need to do.

2.)    If, after starting your browser, you cannot connect then try these steps.

a.)    Try re-booting your computer. If this does not work then start the browser again and click “tools” then select “Internet Options” then choose the “connections” tab. Choose “ LAN SETTINGS” and make sure the Automatically detect settings” checkbox is checked.

b.)    Click OK and then OK again to exit out of the tools.

c.)    Start you browser again.

If the browser still will not give you access to the Internet then do the following

a.)    Click > Start > Control Panel > if you are in Category view then click > Network and Internet Connections > choose the Network connections icon > then right click the “Local Area Connection icon and choose > “Properties.” If you are in Classic view then double click “Network Connection.” then right click the “Local Area Connection icon and choose > “Properties.”

b.)    On the general tab in the “This connection uses the following items: box, select > click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) – make sure the checkbox is checked! –  also, make sure the checkboxes for “ show icon in notification area when connected” and “notify me when this connection has limited or no connection” are checked and then select > properties.

c.)    On the General tab make sure the “Obtain IP address automatically” button is selected

d.)    Make sure the “Obtain DNS Server address automatically” button is selected.

e.)    Click OK then “Close” and re-start your computer.

If, after you have tried all of these above, and you still cannot access the Internet then contact: 410-572-6101 to start a trouble ticket and a tech will come by to assist you.

                                                      FREE SOFTWARE !

Here is a list of recommended free software that will assist you in maintaining a healthy computer. Please be advised that the use of this recommended software in no way indemnifies Ambling if any problems occur from the use of this software. This is merely a recommendation and the user accepts all responsibilities as a result of their use.

1.)    WinPatrol. - http://www.winpatrol.com this is a great free program to help you see what’s going on in your computer.

2.)    http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/ - free anti-virus software

3.)    http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html - SpyBot Search and Destroy – searches for ad-ware, spy-ware, etc. on your local computer and removes it.

4.)    www.lavasoft.de- another application that searches for ad-ware, spy-ware, etc. on your local computer and removes it.

Note: All of above applications also offer a premium paid-for version of their software that is more robust and detailed and it is recommended that you use the premium versions but it is not absolutely necessary to do this to get their benefits. This is only if you want their more advanced features.

TELEPHONE SERVICE

A telephone is provided in the common living area for local use only. Plug your phone into the living room wall jack.  Note your extension on the label.  Inform your friends/relatives to dial 410-546-5991 then extension XXXX.  The wall telephone jacks in the bedrooms do not operate.  If you want a private telephone in your room then you must contract individually yourself with a telephone service

 TV SERVICE

Here are the steps to take to correctly connect your TV.

1.)    Connect a coax cable (not provided by University Village) to the coax connector on the wall and to the coax connection on your TV.

2.)    If you have an older TV that does not have a coax connection then you will need to get a screw terminal to coax adapter. Please refer to the documentation that came with your TV if you have any questions about this.

3.)    Some televisions have the ability to have multiple inputs, i.e. video1, video2, Ant1, Ant2, etc. make sure you connect the coax cable to the Ant1 coax or video in connection on your TV. You may need to push the TV/Video button on the TV or the remote to access the correct input.
