Adult Learning Center
Adult Basic Education (ABE) and GED

Adult Basic Education (ABE)  and GED

ABE and GED are separate activities:
ABE = Monday through Thursday, 9 am – noon (**20 additional hours of Project Enterprise (WE) should be scheduled.)
GED = Monday through Thursday, 1 pm – 4 pm

Classes in the Adult Learning Center will run 12 hours per week.  Students will be expected to be prompt at either 9 am or 1 pm.  Late appearances will be written up as non-attendance. Students will not be allowed to enter late and will need to return the next day.

Maximum time span in activity:
ABE = 90 days (students with sufficient retest scores can move into GED)
GED = 90 days or less (with a 30-day GED testing plan in writing)

Maximum room capacity for each activity is 25 per class (ABE = 25 and GED = 25). We will maintain a waiting list.  If classes are at capacity, students should work on the  GED Software in STS computer labs or Career Center.

Students will be assessed for the appropriate activity, based on CASAS 130 scores.
          ABE
          Math score less than 225
          Reading score less than 236
          Writing score less than 3

          GED

Reading score of 236 or better
Writing score of 3 or better

Case managers must fax their clients’ PDPs to Dawn Thompson at the East SS branch (Fax = 503-256-5503).  There will be one orientation for both activities (ABE GED)—in other words, the orientation is combined. Orientations will be held at 1 p.m. each Friday  Call Dawn Thompson at 503-256-0432, ext. 22538 or Carol Foster at 503-256-0432, ext. 22523 to schedule an orientation. Clients will begin their activity the following Monday after they attend the orientation with all required documentation.

Any clients coming in to ABE GED orientation without CASAS scores and/or a PDP will be referred back to their case manager

ABE students/clients should be engaged in a Core Activity such as Project Enterprise (WE) in the afternoon.  GED students should also be engaged in a Core Activity such as Project Enterprise (WE).
