Why compete? Many people just want to have fun with their dancing. Well, getting better at something you enjoy is fun. Setting goals and even partly acheiving them is fun. Your partner enjoys dancing with you when you improve your skills and that is fun. Your friends will compliment you on how great you look and that is fun. You have a reason to go the whole nine yards with hair, nails, make-up, outfits and that's fun.
