Dancing With the Stars Tour, Final Show, Feb 10
{These are my personal thoughts appearing on my personal website. I am not obligated to restrict my statements to make anyone else happy}
If you love dancing, I hope you had the opportunity to see this this show-
it was very exciting, fast paced, full of variety,
staged beautifully and the music and musicians,
including the vocalists, were phenomenal.

Ok, I just got home from the tour show finale in Philly. There were about 100 people with guest passes at the end of the show. All of those people were hopeful to catch a glimpse of the dancers and touring company musicians and celebrities and to maybe get an autograph or/and a photo. Brian, Mark, Corky Ballas, Anya, Bridgette, Helio and one of the musicians came to visit for a few minutes with the fans.

If you want a person to be a die-hard fan, you need to allow them to be close to you for at least a second or two. I am thinking that most of the dancers don't feel a need to build and continue building their fan base. I think that maybe they are interested in dancing, period. Maybe they feel that a good show is all they need to produce. Who knows? I  know that it is difficult to be up for every show, wind down, sleep in a bus or hotel, be stuck with the same group of people week after week. On the other hand, dancers are not the biggest stars, so if a dancer has a chance to get a fan base, why not put the extra hour per day into it? it would have been a special and memorable day for this group of spectators to have been able to enjoy a meet and greet with more of the dwts touring company. It would have been a "conversation piece" at work, at home, at recreation centers, etc. So, tonight, Mark Ballas secured some support.  I think that Helio gained about 100 new fans by coming down to the reception for a little while. He said he would give dancing a break. So I guess his new fans will be watching the next Indy 500. Helio gained some new racing fans, and Brian and Anya, who are not on the next episode, are becoming the top dogs for the Philly area dance maniacs.

Helio and some new fans at the guest reception following the Philly finale. They're all talking about him.

I was a judge at a competition many years ago. I thought my job was to do some judging, dress and act appropriately, be on itme, give proper consideration to all contestants, avoid messing up my judging sheets and maybe write up some of the events for the dance publications. When the organizer held a meeting for the judges, the first subject was the sponsors' reception. He expected us all to attend, arrive before the sponsors, be VERY dressed up, and VERY social. Well, that sounded like fun and I liked the idea, but I was surprised. I should not have been. I usually am the kind of person to go one step further, and that's what he was asking us to do. Do you get what I am saying?

I have a friend who loves DWTS. She calls in to vote, but she won't vote for certain dancers because she is annoyed that they don't participate in the tour. She too expects the dancers to go one step further. But she isn't their boss and neither am I.

We have had a mild winter here in Philly, but today the winds kicked up and it was really cold-just like last year at the Philly show. Figures. It was not pleasant waiting outside the Wachovia Center in the cold and biting wind. But it was warm inside. It was warm and cozy and also warm and inviting. Just about everyone who is important in my life was there to share the excitement with us. Naturally, these people are all predjudiced in favor of Brian, and everyone thinks Brian is the most appealing dancer in the company. They like Louis, Edyta, Christina and Snow, but they are totally enamored with Brian. I am surprised that they don't express much impression with Derek, Mark, Alec and Genya. These men exhibit an ease with movement, balance, speed, control; and I think they are GREAT. Skill is very important for first impression in an activity like dancing, but people appreciate, remember and support a likable and approachable person.

My students and friends try to justify their opinions and personal taste with a very specific list of attributes that Brian displays better than the other dancers. It's interesting. I was surprised that so many of our group said that the Moon River waltz was their favorite dance of the the show. It did look pretty cool with all that smoke swirling around the dancers' feet. It actually looked like they were dancing on a cloud. This waltz was a huge change of pace so it stood out in the middle of one upbeat, driving dance after another. I really like the rumba presented by Alec and Edyta. Everyone's taste is different. The other people with me preferred the rumba by Derek and Snow. (I since polled two group classes for the students' favorite-it turned out to be Alec and Edyta.)

I get a big kick out of the costuming, hair and make-up. The beauticians did another fabulous job.Here's a note: the ladies who had straight hair at the last show had curly hair tonight and vice, versa. I guess some of that change was for the sake of change. I preferred Edyta's hair totally straight and Anya's curled, but they still looked great. I think that Irina and Christine were the real standouts as dancers, performers and beauties.

Genya, Derek and Alec were phenomenal in the dancing with the poles number. They all had bare arms and the muscles in the arms really stood out as they connected with the poles. These men danced "hard" in this number and I especially enjoyed the ending poses. I have seen this four times, and still the part I remember is the movement-the music escapes me. I think they dance to "Hip hip, Chin Chin" but once the female dancers leave the music leaves too. That's just me.

It was a great show. I was disappointed that the tango was eliminated because of Karina's injury. Well, I don't know if she was injured, I have to assume that was why she wouldn't be in the last show. It was fun and exciting to see the staff of the tour come out onto the stage to give Wayne Newton an award. Marie did a song, "Crazy," as a fill at a certain point, and all the male dancers joined her on the floor. She had them each sing a few words. Evidently, most of them didn't know the words so it was pretty funny. They all were good sports though. Only one took off running. While they were all waiting for their chance to sing with Marie, the others were bringing partners up to the dancefloor to do a little slow dancing. I asked Brian how long this was supposed to go on. He said he had no idea. So I guess this was all just semi-planned.

While the show was going on, I was wondering if any of the dancers were thinking, "Wow, it's finally almost over!" There were a couple of things that were obviously intended to be pranks just to amuse the dancers and give them one more things to laugh about. The one I liked was Christian Baerens walking onto the dancefloor from downstage left. This entry was supposed to have been made by one of the female dancers. She came in from the stage.

Everyone agreed that this show was better than the last two. It definitely was stepped up a notch. The tour show is a terrific way to spend an evening. I can't wait for the next one.
